It is our belief that children become better readers and writers with daily opportunities to practice and connect to a variety of texts geared to their instructional level. We also encourage students to independently read with a variety of genres. There is a literary focus with each reading selection. Students are encouraged to predict questions, visualize, connect, review and evaluate as they read. Writing prompts connect to what we are reading with narrative, and persuasive essays developed during the year. We want students to understand that reading is thinking.

Goals:

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • read with understanding and fluency
  • read and understand literature as a representative of various societies, eras and ideas
  • write to communicate for many purposes
  • use language arts to acquire, assess and communicate information

Requirements:

  • All students are required to earn 25 AR points per quarter.
  • All students are required to read 150 minutes per week and record these minutes on a reading log, which must be signed by a guardian and turned in every Monday for 5 points. Once all AR points are earned, that student is not required to complete reading logs for the rest of the quarter.
  • Students will complete a minimum of three major essays throughout the year.
  • Students must come to me before school, or class, to discuss absences/ make-ups.
