Extended Programs

Extended Programs

Extended Programs are after school extensions of programs that already involve students during school hours.

ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM

Students interested in participating may access the Accelerated Reading list on the school website. When finished reading one of the books, a student comes to the Learning Center to take a computerized quiz. Students will be challenged to reach a set goal in 6th grade or 7th/8th grade in order to qualify for the reward…an end of the year field trip!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Teams of four students combine to read either 16 or 24 books beginning in mid-December. “Skull Sessions” will be scheduled in March to test knowledge of books being read with games and activities. In April, the teams will compete in tournament “battles” where they will answer questions about various books until one championship team remains!

CONCERT BAND

Students in the Concert Band rehearse five times per week as a group during the school day. Each band member also has a small group sectional lesson with Mr. Dall one period each week. On selected occasions (usually preceding concerts and competitions), the group will practice before or after school.

MUSICALS / CHORUS

Students in the chorus rehearse during the regular school day as part of a five day per week class with Ms. Rzeszutko. The winter production involves chorus students only. The spring musical is open to all students. After school rehearsals begin in February. Every year, our musical presentations involve over 100 students in the cast and crew!

INTERMEDIATE BAND

Students in the Intermediate Band rehearse five times each week as a group during the school day. Each band member also has a small group sectional lesson with Mr. Dall one period each week. On selected occasions (usually preceding concerts), the band will practice before or after school.

ORCHESTRA

Class meets every day during the school day. In addition, each member has a weekly, one-period, small group lesson. Students explore a wide variety of music.

PEER TUTORING

Peer tutoring is an activity open to all students who would like to earn service credit by helping others who may need assistance in some academic areas. Students complete a short questionnaire indicating days and hours that would be convenient, and are scheduled by the coordinator. The commitment to be a tutor is flexible, and can be adjusted as sports seasons change or other activities arise. It is a great way to help others while earning the service credit needed for Honor Society!

WRITING CENTER

At various times of the year, writing center helpers will be available after school. These students will earn service credit for working with students to review their writing for grammar and usage errors. They will also review the work for other requirements as requested by teachers. There will be a writing teacher available for help when needed. This program will enable the stronger student writers to strengthen writing skills and help other students to gain extra points for correct usage in compositions. It will also enable students who struggle with the basics to use more of their creative abilities.
