Sixth Grade

Sixth Grade Teachers

Sixth grade is organized into “teams” consisting of approximately 50 students, with two teachers handling all of their academic subjects: science, social studies, reading, language arts, and math. By limiting the number of teachers per child, communication between home and school is greatly simplified and the transition between elementary and junior high is also made easier for students. Students who are ready for advanced placement or TDP enrichment, or those needing extra help, have a large variety of opportunities. In addition, our homework coupon program has proven to be very successful in helping students keep current with the increased workload.

In September, most sixth graders travel to camp, for a three day outdoor education experience. This program is a highlight of the school year, and it helps students and teachers develop a positive working relationship that sets the tone for the school year. The theme of our trip is “cooperative learning” and it is incorporated into our many classes at camp, including cooperative adventures, the ropes course, archery, boating, art, nature, and WTW (Working Together Works). The students live together in cabin groups and participate in many activities designed to enhance cooperation and a positive feeling about school.

Keeping parents informed is a key aspect of our sixth grade program. We encourage parents to attend our parent-student meeting, Open House, fall goal setting conferences, and spring portfolio review. Parents receive report cards or progress reports eight times during the year and we also send home an “office report” with detailed information. We feel very strongly that active parent involvement is a key to student success and look forward to partnering with parents for a very successful year!

Seventh Grade Teachers

Welcome to seventh grade! There are currently over 200 students starting seventh grade at Friendship Junior High School. Our new schedules this year includes a nine-period day with two periods for Literature and Composition and a Homeroom period or additional class opposite lunch. This also provides teachers time to meet daily in areas such as assessing student needs, sharing and planning curriculum, working with technology and planning grade level / team partner activities.

Students also take part in Physical Education and Fine and Applied Arts including Music, Drama, Art, Life Skills and Applied Technology. Students are exposed to many of the following programs: Foreign Language, Instrumental Music and Chorus. There are also many opportunities for the seventh grade students to grow and develop through after school participation in clubs, intramural sports, interscholastic sports and other extended programs. Involvement in all areas of the school day is important for student success. Please contact your child’s teachers and/or grade level administrator  if you have any questions throughout the year. Together we can make this a successful seventh grade year at Friendship!

Our eighth grade class at Friendship Junior High consists of a highly diverse population of approximately 200 students. Most students are placed on two-teacher teams. Classes taught in each team would be considered the core classes-literature/composition, math, social studies, and science. Students also take classes in fine arts, physical education, and either reading or foreign language. Our goal is to prepare our students so they will be successful not only in high school, but for life.

Many extracurricular opportunities are provided to our students. Teachers make themselves available before and after school for assistance. Numerous clubs are offered Monday through Thursday. Approximately one Friday a month, we open up our school for “Stay and Play.” Interscholastic and intramural sports are popular at all grade levels. Students also participate in our two school musicals and jazz band. Buses are provided for a 7:30am early arrival and a 4:15pm and 5:00pm dismissal.

Participating in these various opportunities, students feel a sense of belonging and school pride, and it helps them build great relationships and memories to last a lifetime.
