​Grove Cluster – Salt Creek and Rupley Presentation – 4.01
Principal Diana O’Donnell and teacher Nicola Avena from Rupley and principal Nicole Robinson and teacher Emily Jordan from Salt Creek, along with students from each school, spoke about Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at CCSD59. They discussed several aspects of SEL which even included an SEL circle demonstration with participation from the board of education.

Agenda Item 5.0

Board Reorganization – 5.01
a. Adoption of Board Policy Manual
The board discussed the adoption of the District 59 Board Policy Manual.

b. Determination of Length of Office — President, Vice President and Secretary to the Board of Education
On April 23, 2018, the board will vote on a resolution establishing the length of office for the president, vice-president, and secretary to be for a period of one year.

c. Establishment of Stipend for the Board Secretary
Board Policy 2.110 states the secretary may receive compensation as fixed by the board before his/her election. A resolution will go before the board at the April 23, 2018, board meeting, allowing the board to insert an agreed-upon figure for compensation for the performance of the duties of the Board Secretary.

d. Nomination and Election of President
The board will elect a Board President at the April 23, 2018, board meeting

e. Nomination and Election of Vice-President
The board will elect a Board Vice-President at the April 23, 2018, board meeting.

f. Nomination and Election of Secretary
The board will elect a Board Secretary at the April 23, 2018, board meeting.

g. Set Time, Dates, and Location for Regular Meetings of the Board of Education for the 2018/19 School Year

During the reorganization meeting, the board of education is required by the Illinois School Code to set the date, time, and place for its regular meetings. A listing of suggested meeting dates, times, and locations for the 2018/19 school year is expected to be approved at the April 23, 2018, board meeting.

h. Appointment of IASB Governing Board Representative
The board will appoint an IASB Governing Board representative at the April 23, 2018, board meeting.

Action Items

Agenda Item 8.0

8.01 PTAB Authorization to Intervene on Assessment Appeals
The board approved Franczek Radelet P.C., as its legal representative, to: a) file a Request to Intervene in Appeal Proceedings in all 2015-19 assessment-year appeals filed at the PTAB, for which the board receives notice from the Cook County Board of Review, and b) represent the board’s interests in these proceedings.

8.02 2018/19 School Year Pay Bus Fee Proposal
The board approved an amended resolution to establish the 2018/19 school year pay bus fee at $360. This is the amount a family will pay to have their child transported if it is determined that the student is non-eligible for free transportation.

8.03 Ridge Family Center for Learning Intersession Programming Fee Proposal
The board approved the following as the intersession fees at the Ridge Family Center for Learning for the 2018/19 school year:

  • Sep/Oct 2018 intersession (8 days) $160
  • Apr 2019 intersession (5 days) $100

8.04 Proclamation for Volunteer Appreciation Week April 17-21, 2018
School Volunteer Appreciation Week will be celebrated throughout CCSD59 during the week of April 17-21, 2018. In recognition of the hours of service provided by volunteers who assist the children and staff of our school system, the board adopts a proclamation recognizing volunteers for their service to the children, staff, and school district.

8.05 Approval of Enchanted Backpacks to Rupley Elementary
The board accepted an additional donation from Enchanted Backpack. At the February 12, 2018, board meeting, the board approved a $1,000 donation from Enchanted Backpack to Rupley Elementary. Diana O’Donnell, the principal of Rupley School, has since been notified that this donation amount has been expanded an additional $9,000. The Enchanted Backpack Mobile Van will again be able to deliver and provide school supplies to Rupley’s entire student body of over 400 students, including books, school supplies, winter jackets, hats, gloves, socks, t-shirts, personal hygiene items, board games, recess equipment, and art supplies. Teachers and families will be able to select needed items from the selection provided from Enchanted Backpack, which will reduce the cost of school supplies and personal items for Rupley families.

8.06 Approval of Donors Choose Donation for Grove Junior High School
The board approved the request of Chloe Wells to fundraise through Donors’ Choose for materials for Grove Junior High School in the amount of $800. This donation will be used in a Family and Consumer Science (FACS) classroom to create a guided mixing station for students, which will include four stand mixers. The mixers would support FACS classes as well as Grove’s Cooking Club, allowing students to learn real life bakery techniques and expand their learning of cooking techniques.
